Is it grape or aubergine?

It's actually "Rare Wine" from American Tradition.

At first, I was a little worried.

But it dried to the right shade with three coats. The garage door still needs a 4th coat. It was a lot of white and receives some sun in the mornings, so there are spotty areas. I'll finish that up when I'm done here.

I built the shutters from 1x6 pine. I cut the 12 foot boards to 58" x 2-1/2". I had intended to use only three boards per shutter, but that looked a little small even laying on the table in the basement. So I settled on 5. After I had all my pieces, I painted everything. Two coats on each side with a third coat on the face.

Then I used wooden spaces 3/4" thick to lay out each end making sure it was all square.

Then I attached the cross members with 1-1/4" staples driven 1/4" below the surface.

A little patch and paint, and they were laid out to dry.

Can't wait to finish the garage door. It's a LOT of purple.

Now that the front of the house is getting work done, I really want to rebuild the front porch and roof overhang. The vinyl just looks old. The metal wrapping every piece of wood is in bad shape and dirty. The steps are cracked and broken. The downspouts need to be painted to match the brick. So many plans. So little time.

6:29pm - The garage and basement door are finished. I haven't scraped the paint off the windows yet, so no close shots, but here's what you see from the street.

Lagerfeld roses have been planted in the white bed and treated for black spot. I watered all the tea olives and the lilac. I tossed out seeds from Janie in the perennial bed. Sowed seeds for four o'clocks and cosmos too. I checked on the rose cuttings from the roses across the street. The only cutting I pulled out of the soil has roots. I've got to pot up the cuttings from Plantmaven's pink brugs in the morning. They've been in water for a week and have tiny root nubs forming. I've had a full day. I think I'm ready for dinner. Pizza and pasta. Off to the grocery store for supplies.

I'm going with aubergine :)
You did a great job on the shutters, it all looks really nice! I like people that aren't afraid of color!

Thanks Catherine. There are a few bricks that have that color in it. I had hoped it would bring them out, but it didn't. I still like the color and doubt many people will find it overdone.

Fantastic! Our cottage is a plum color, faded now and need of a new paint job. We've been called the purple house. At first it seemed a bit 'too', but the color really grew on us and we noticed how it also changes with the light of day. Sometimes it looks gray, sometimes brown, sometimes purple. You did a great job Tom and I love the look. You can see the color in the bricks. We wanted our color to look weathered and even took a piece of pine bark to get the sort of shade that we wanted, as there is purple in the bark.

You've done a lot of work inside and out in your home in a short period of time. Way to go! Enjoy what you have done and look forward to all the other projects on your list.

Good eye Tom. That color looks great with the brick, something I could have never picked out! You are a work horse when you get going. Want to come paint a chicken house. I even have a professional sprayer, just no gumption to get it done!

In the photo of the front door (finished), I can really see the aubergine in the brick. I think you did a great job with a color echo. I also think it's just what my old hometown needs! LOL

Thanks FlowerLady. I carried this paint swatch in the truck for over a year. Took me a long time to finally do this. I'm glad I did. I know what you mean about colors. It can be tough picking just the right one.

Heather, I'm so sore this morning I can barely drink my coffee. I think you need to put your son-in-law to painting that chicken coop. :)

Cameron, I forget that you grew up here. Driving around, I look for houses with something different. There aren't many. Black, white, maybe a red front door is about as adventurous as they get around here.

I love it (I painted my last two houses doors purple, so I guess I'm partial)

I LOVE it!
You've probably seen my purple porch swing on my blog...it would be quite happy next to your shutters. It makes me happy every time I look at it.

I love your choices.

Mmmmmm....my bold yellow door may become a deep eggplant color.....
