Bead Board

I started steaming the walls. The paint was peeling off fine, in most areas. But the plaster has a grid pattern etched into it. I can't find any information on how they used to do this, but there it is. I don't like that pattern.

So I went to Lowe's. The gift card had +/-$20 left on it. I returned $10 worth of plumbing and electrical parts. I had $31 to spend. I found bead board plywood (damaged, of course) for $9.48/sheet. I bought all three.

I got this one section in the hall finished. I'll use this as a base line for the rest of the kitchen. The bead board will be a backsplash on the sink wall and under the upper cabinets on each side of the range. It will also continue a short ways behind the fridge, further if I have enough material. It will all be painted white like the trim.

The floors...steaming does work. So far.

3:57pm - I think I'm going to finish this tonight.

The smell is "incredible" to say the least.

5:54pm - The floors are done. They're stained where the old fridge was and in front of the sink.

I'll decide what to do later. I really like the wood. I'm still planning to do vinyl tile in the hallway to the outside door. It'll be a sort of mud room. I want to find a bench that will fit.

Amazing, Tom! If those floors could talk. BTW, The last photo of the garden you did from this morning is beautiful. I'll bet the cars are slowing down when they come to your house.

The bead board looks great. Sanding next to get the stain out or over stain. You are working very hard. Good job.

The bead board does look great and so do the floors. Well except for that blasted stain that is. Crud. Is it stained or is it water damage? You can't sand out water damage that bad but you might be able to bleach it out. I understand there is a certain "bleaching" product for wood but I don't recall it now. You're doing an amazing job!

Thanks ya'll. I'm enjoying it.

LeSan, the stain is water damage to the wood. It goes all the way down. I can see it in the basement from underneath. SO....probably gonna be staining the wood nearly black if the bleach doesn't work. I'm okay with it either way.

Bead board wainscoting is almost "de rigueur" in a cottage anyway! How lucky you found those damaged pieces to cover your wall probs. It lends such charm to a room. Great job, Tom.

Some may feel squeamish about eating it, but rabbit has a fan base that grows as cooks discover how easy they are to raise — and how good the meat tastes.
