Orange

Yesterday, I saw my first hummingbird of the season sipping from the red hot pokers near the street. Of course I didn't have my camera.

The lantana I overwintered in the basement is blooming. The original planting did not survive the winter.

The Knockouts are taking a break while the ditch lilies do their thing. I was wondering what it would be like to have orange and pink/red blooms together in this space. I guess I don't have to worry about that now.

California poppies have been flopping all over. I've yet to see a flush of blooms on upright stalks. I'll let them reseed though I have yet to find a seed pod.

Cosmos are blooming here and there.

Joseph's Coat?

Rosa chinensis.

A ladybug. I've been seeing a lot of them this year. I've not sprayed for insects this year. I see a few issues with the roses and some blackspot. We'll see how it works out when the humidity and temperatures return this summer.

It's 63 degrees. More rain passed through overnight. The high today should reach the mid 70s.

rosa chinensis is a class of rose. What is it, as I've never seen this plant? hmmmmm

I see seed pods in your photo of Cal. poppies. To the left of the bloom in the center, look up and down. The upper one is about half inch long, the lower one is about 2 inches long. Cal. poppy pods are long and thin. When they begin to look tannish and darker lines form, pull them off and put them in a paper bag and secure the top. You'll hear them pop open and seeds scatter.

After you gather some seeds, cut them back by a third and they might bloom again. Cal. poppies have an enormous root that looks like a carrot. A few lasted over the winter here.

Jim, they were all labeled that. The label also says it's a minature rose. The plant right now is about 1' tall and 18" wide. I got a Martha Gonzales too. And a pink one with the same label as the orange.

Thanks Nell. I thought those were blooms yet to open. I'll keep an eye on them. My columbines are starting to ripen now.

did you just dig up the lantana? i had a couple that survived but more that didn't. i lost quite a few perennials this year. i guess the cold was just TOO cold.

Denise, I took cuttings before the frost in December killed the mother plant. They root easily.

We saw our first ones the other day going after the bottlebrush. They were having spasms for the stuff!

Tom,
Glad you finally saw your first hummingbird! I haven't seen any in the mountains yet, although there were quite a few at home in the Piedmont.

I'm not surprised the Lantana had problems--this winter was so tough on normally hardy plants...

Hi Tom: Told you I don't comment much but read every post you make. Fantastic you are about three weeks ahead of us. Things are growing like crazy.

Have a great day,
John

The roses are looking great. That's a pretty neat trick for collecting seed from the poppies. I'll have to give that a try.
