The Results

I did a little work in the backyard last night. I think it looks nice.

It's 30 degrees. The sky is clear. The sun is coming up.

Snow kidding.

There's snow in the forecast for tonight. The guy on the radio said no accumulation is expected. The weather.com forecast shows 100% chance between 6pm and midnight. The temperature will be 33 degrees. Yeah, no accumulation. Watch, we'll get a foot.

From accuweather.com

It's 30 degrees and cloudy.

6:32pm - Snow started falling just before 6pm. It's a light fine snow that's already covering roofs and vehicles. The forecast is for 3-6 inches. It's 34 degrees.

8:23pm - 30 degrees. Software enhanced.

10:32pm - It's 30 degrees.

At least it isn't raining.

That was my first thought when I opened my eyes and saw snowflakes passing by the window. There were fat flakes and tiny flakes. Some dropped quickly. Others floated lazily to the ground. They all melted as soon as they touched any soaked surface. It's 36 degrees.

I'm planning to work inside today. As soon as the house warms up from the overnight drop that happens as the wood fire burns down, I'll be painting again. I will finish painting the kitchen today. I mean it. Seriously. Or something like that.

It's snowing again. Ugh.

10:54am
- The wall behind the fridge has one coat of paint on it. I also scrubbed the floor again. That smell is back. It's nasty, like a combination of feet and garlic. I have no clue what causes it, but I'm thinking it's the glue they used to attach the original floor coverings. It's horrible.

I've also put a third coat of paint on the beadboard on each side of the stove. I'm going to move on to the small room off the kitchen. I've got some plaster work to fix this morning and will hopefully sand it later this evening once the kitchen paint is dry. If the sun comes out, I need to split some firewood. So the kitchen may go on hold, again.

It continued to snow for over an hour this morning. No accumulation as it's 37 degrees. The sun came out for two seconds at one point. It was beautiful with the falling snow.

I'm longing for summertime.

1:02pm - The kitchen paint is done. At least until I install the countertops and have to touch up every wall. I can't wait to get the small room finished, too. I did get up the old vinyl floor. Its paper backing did not come up. That's fine. I'm going to have to install tile over this part anyway. So I'll use the steamer to get as much off the plywood subfloor as possible. The hardwoods under this are nearly ruined from water damage thanks to a leaky door. I can see that in the basement.

I'm really starting to love this green.

There's still plenty left to do:

Countertops
backsplash behind stove
quarter round
toekicks
floors
and many tiny details, including an over the range microwave and dishwasher.

It's 39 degrees outside. I need to get some wood split.

More snow pictures.

It's 30 degrees and sunny. Taken before work this morning when it was still 19 degrees.

It continues.

It's been mostly sleet falling this morning with a little snow mixed in. The roads are not great. I was at work by 6am, home for breakfast and refilling the wood heater now. It's 28 degrees.

It begins.

Shortly after 7pm, it started as an icy drizzle.

It's all downhill from here.

Salt trucks were spraying the roads yesterday. The squirrels seem to be more chattery than normal. Birds have been taking turns filling up on the fresh seeds I put out in the feeders and saucers scattered around the yard. They know it's coming.

It's clear and cool this morning as the sun rises above the trees outback. It's 37 degrees.

By 6pm, we should be in the mid 40s. Within an hour, the temperature is forecast to fall to near or below freezing as the rain starts. By midnight, the ice and/or snow will be coming down. We're supposed to get about 1/2" of something. If it's ice, that's a big problem. If it's snow, I suspect there will be more than 1/2". This will continue through midnight on Saturday.

I was planning to work on the kitchen today. When I went to bed, I made a promise that I would get up and start painting after the first cup of coffee. I'm just not in the mood. I might be later on, but I'm thinking I may just take the day off. I do need to bring in the rest of the split firewood. I'll need it come Sunday night when the lows will dip into the very low double digits and possible into the 8-9 degree range. I'm hoping it snows. That will add a little protection to the plants already pushing up new spring growth thanks to some warmer weather over the past two weeks.

The chili is gone. It was delicious. I think today I will make a pot of butterbeans. I need some fatback.

Mother Nature is a cruel creature.

Yep. More snow. It's 27 degrees. I haven't been outside yet, so I apologize for the window screen. Tonight and Tuesday will be brutal with lows in the teens again. Time to fire up the basement heater and get the house warm.

11:02am - Still 27 degrees. The snow is melting, but I wanted to get a few pictures before it disappeared completely. What doesn't melt will refreeze tonight.

Snow Day

It's 21 degrees and sunny. There's a light dusting of snow on the ground. It started last night around 10pm. I don't plan on venturing outside until the temperature is at least above freezing. That should be around 1pm. So here's a shot from the front steps.

See, not a lot of snow. Today I plan to clean the house. I never realized how much dust I could stir up just by painting. I've got some things that need to be moved into larger containers on the propagation rack. And there are some willow cuttings that are going to start wrapping roots around me in the dark if I don't get them potted.

12:44pm - Most of the "snow" has melted. It's 28 degrees and windy. I need to chop some firewood for the next few days. I got the willow transplanted from water into cups. I have four kinds: red, black, giant white, and coral embers.

SNOW!

The weatherman was right for a change. Two inches of snow and it's still coming down. Our first snow of the year and the only snow I've ever experienced in this house. It's 25 degrees.

From the map, it looks like it will all be over in a couple more hours.

As for the dining room. I got the arch roughed in and the baseboards replaced. I need a 1x6x12 to finish the trim caps. Even though I had promised myself I would not spend any money on this room, I have no choice if I want to get it finished. I'll be heading out to Lowe's in a couple hours.

I also finished the window trim and replaced the molding around the door to the attic.

Today, I want to continue working on the arch. I'll use drywall tape and a soupy plaster mix to smooth it out. I need to sand the corner of the dining room where water damage had ruined the plaster. Then I'll caulk everything and start painting. I was a little more ambitious in my plans yesterday than I could manage. I quit around 10pm. With the weather, there's not much else I can do today.
