Fall Blooms

It was a great weekend in Asheville, cool and sometimes sunny. There's not a lot of foliage color yet, although the dogwoods seem to be leading the charge. Another couple of weeks, I'll be seeing color in the backyard.

I noticed Sunday evening when I arrived home that some of the Swamp Sunflower was blooming. More have opened this morning.

These flowers are less than 2" across. The clump at the corner will probably show a few dozen blooms in the coming days.

Butterfly ginger is still blooming. This is another group. I think I'll move all these into one spot next spring if I'm still here.

I've collected a lot of Blackberry Lily seeds. The open pods are what give this plant its common name.

Ageratum appeared from nowhere a few weeks ago. I hadn't paid much attention as I thought it was another plant due to the leaves. I hope it will reseed a bit and provide the late bees with nectar until the frost takes it out.

It's 57 degrees. Tonight, 44. Next week, we will resume our normal temperatures for October. It's a little on the chilly side. The heat is on.

I've been scoping out the swamp sunflower along the roadsides here! I may have to stop one of these days to collect some seeds for my garden.

When the Swamp Sunflower blooms, the state fair is near!!! They are one of my all time favorites for fall. So bright and blatant, they just scream fall.

How does the butterfly ginger do in NC? Can you keep it in the ground? Love the picture. It is probably my favorite flower.
